Pilgrims Vs. Today: What Is Worn to Thanksgiving?

Tags :

We all know the stories about the First Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims and we all recognize the attire worn by those early settlers like the Pilgrims. Today we’ll look at just how far fashion has come and be thankful no one (hopefully) shows up to Thanksgiving dinner dressed like this guy (see Left).

To start with, a Pilgrim man often wore a felt hat (with a buckle in some interpretations). The next easily noticeable accoutrement is the Ruff. It looks much like the variations of ruffles and large white collars worn throughout history, mostly in paintings of royalty. This would get covered I gravy so fast, it wouldn’t be funny (ok, it would be) if worn today.

Slightly less awkward and odd is the doublet with cuffs. This is a fairly typical jacket of the time (also for quite some time before and after the Pilgrims) and it could be compared to a waistcoat or suit jacket. Some pilgrims also wore a vest and a long sleeved shirt if not the doublet.

Further down the body we find the Breeches, garters, stocking, and shoes . These breeches look silly by today’s standards but they obviously looked good to the Pilgrim women. While there are few comparisons between this style of pants and today’s modern suit pants, at least the color of the pants and jackets matched (with the shoes , too!), making the men look well put together. Today, men wear solid color jackets, shoes, and pants to the actual ankle, leaving the stockings to the women.

While the history of the suit ad tuxedo is long and convoluted, we can still see some similarities to the traditional pilgrim garb. Wearing a suit to Thanksgiving dinner will make you look and feel good, but it can also be a history lesson. Impress the friends and family (and in-laws) by comparing your suit pieces to the good ol’ fashioned Pilgrim attire.

If you don’t want to go the suit route (because gravy on your best suit, tie, or shirt is a definite no-go) then consider dressing closer to a traditional Native American the Pilgrims may have contacted (see Right). Replace the deerskin mantle with a suede shirt or jacket and the deerskin leggings with jeans or corduroy, and tie a piece of twine around your leg for the legging tie. You can also pick up a pair of moccasins at any number of shoe stores, as with a shell or leather necklace. Don’t forget a nice turkey feather accessory to keep it extra festive! If you must have some sort of fur robe for maximum authenticity, shop around for just any faux fur scraps. As for the knife, make it functional and bring your own turkey carving knife—festive and functional!

No matter what you choose, keep Rose Tuxedo in mind for all of your holiday attire needs. There isn’t a man alive who doesn’t look better in a high quality, well-fitting suit.

How To Wear A Suit This Thanksgiving

Tags :

Wearing a suit to any family or formal gathering is a great idea: it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. If you have no clue what to wear to your own Thanksgiving family dinner or to the home of your spouse, girlfriend, or best friend you can never go wrong with a suit. If you know a suit will come across as snooty or obnoxious you could always dress it down. Or ignore the haters and wear it anyway because you look amazing in that suit, sir. Much like our post in September about the different ways to utilize a three-piece suit, you don’t always have to wear the full classic suit. You can use the pieces to your advantage and look your best and use the same suit for several Thanksgiving Weekend events.

Here are some ways to wear your best suit to any Thanksgiving event this November.

  1. Full suit: Reserve this for impressing in-laws, bosses, coworkers, or strangers. Gravy is messy and you may spill something. If you wear a brown suit, gravy may not be a problem. Stick to earth tones with some accents matching the color-changing leaves. Maybe avoid the three-piece suit here and stick to slacks and jacket.
  2. Slacks and Vest: This look is always flattering and looks much more relaxed than a three-piece suit. It could be paired with a long tie or bowtie in colors matching the food or leaves of fall. Roll up your shirt sleeves and add some patterned socks with your loafers. Keep is casual but clean. Gravy-color clothes will only take you so far.
  3. Slacks and Sweater: This doesn’t technically require owning or renting a suit, but the right slacks are important. Pair a nice pair of slacks, a collared shirt, and a festive vest to look casual but put together. Keep the turkey turtle neck at home and stick to a sweater vest or V-neck sweater with an autumn color pallet. Reserve the tacky sweater for sitting at home eating your leftovers with your wife or girlfriend.
  4. Jeans and Vest or Jacket: For those family members and friends you’re more comfortable with, pair a nice suit jacket or vest with a clean, straight leg dark wash jean—no holes. This can be worn with a festive-colored dress shirt (with or without tie) with the suit jacket or a plaid button-down with the suit vest. The combinations are endless. Just keep it neat and leave the elastic waistbands at home. No one needs to see that.
  5. Utilize your boring business brown suit: Browns work great for Thanksgiving. Tweed, wool, or blends will look great. Pair it with a pop of color to grab some attention. If you arrive at a holiday party and you’re overdressed, you can always remove a layer and roll up your sleeves or remove your tie. If you’re underdressed, put the jacket back on and straighten your tie. If you are unsure of what attire the party will require, Put on a two-piece suit with a sweater and you should realize quickly what layers to shed. Or, simply ask. It never hurts.

    Don’t wear this. Ever.

5 Reason Why Wearing Tuxedo is Fun

Tags :

Tuxedo

TuxedoYou may not know this, but dressing up can be fun.  We know that you love that t-shirt you got at Disney World five years ago. We understand that those gray sweat pants are comfortable and that you like to have them on when you’re watching the big play-off.  There’s no doubt that those old sneakers feel good, they look like there at least two sizes too big.  Still, what we’re trying to say is that you will be surprised at how good you’re going to feel in a handsome suit or tuxedo.  Almost everyday, we have young dudes coming in and acting as if they have been told we were dentists, not a tux rental business.  We are going to turn that around today, because we’re going to give you five good reasons that wearing “dress-up clothes” id not the same as having a tooth pulled. 🙂

1. Ever heard the phrase “The clothes make the man“?  Well, we know that’s not really true.  The truth is that character makes the man. But, what that phrase is trying to say is that when you have on sharp clothing, it can make you look in the mirror and say, “Hey, I’m a good-looking guy”.  Another thing that the phrase is trying to get across is that if you are interviewing for a job, or running for an office, people have a tendency to judge you, at least in part, by how you look.  Come to think of it, that is a pretty important thing to think about when you have to interview or make a good impression.  Rose Tuxedo can have you looking spiffy in no time, and your chances of landing the gig will increase dramatically.

2.  If you are asked to be a member of a wedding party or have to participate in any other event that requires that you be in front of people, you are going to find that being decked out in the best looking suit available, or the most dashing tuxedo will give you the confidence and peace of mind you need to get over that stage fright that might try to creep over you.Tux91  Who can feel nervous when wearing clothes that “make he man”.

3.  If you are a high school graduate, you’re young enough to have probably not worn a tuxedo very often.  If you rented a tuxedo for your prom, that might have been the first time .  Wasn’t it kind of the first time that you felt, well, for lack of a better word, adult?  Tuxedos have a way of doing that.

4.  While you’re still young, you can play around with your formalwear look.  There is nothing like a beautiful formal suit or tuxedo, but you can cool it out with a colored vest, cumberbund, bowtie, or pocket handerkerchief.

5.  There will come a time when you will know that if you are asked to wear a tuxedo to a function, that function is probably going to be special, and you are probably going to have a blast.  So, now the secret is out.  Tuxedos can, and almost always are, FUN!

Why Choose Rose Tuxedo?

Rose Tuxedo

Rose TuxedoWhat are some of the things that make Rose Tuxedo of Arizona different from other places that rent tuxedos, suits and accessories?  There are many things that make Rose Tuxedo your tuxedo rental experts:

1.  Rose Tuxedo is family-owned and operated.  Do you know why patronizing a local store is better than going to a big national chain?  For one thing, it keeps your money in the community rather than sending it off to a corporate headquarters, that might even be in a different country.  Local businesses keep the community connected, and and a community business knows what their community needs.

2.  Rose Tuxedo has their inventory of tuxes, suits, and accessories in their own warehouses.  There is no shipping costs or waiting for a shipment to arrive.  This is important when you need your formal wear quickly or when you have an emergency  “costume malfunction”.

3.  You can actually order your tuxedo online.  Or, if you have questions or need help with your formalwear in any way, go to:  service@rosetuxedoaz.com

4.  One of Rose Tuxedo’s favorite sayings is, “When it has to be perfect…”.  Well, that’s exactly what they mean. Now, everyone knows there is no such thing as perfection, but if any business can come close to the bullseye, it’s Rose Tuxedo.  They are willing to go the extra mile to be sure that you get what you want, when you want it, and for the price that you can afford.

5.  That’s why another saying that is popular at Rose Tuxedo is, “You’re going to love the way you save”.  Some of the big box stores say,”You’re going to love the way you look”.  Well, that goes without saying, right?  At Rose, you are going to have both.  You will look sharp and fashionable, and you are going to save money.

6.  Rose Tuxedo is rated on Wedding Wire and was voted locally  Best Place to Rent a Prom or Wedding Tuxedo, three years in a row from the Readers’ Choice Awards.  Rose Tux was also voted Arizona Bride’s “Best of 2013 – Favorite Local Vendor for Grooms Tux, Prom Tux, and Wedding Tux.  Not too shabby, right?

7.  Rose Tuxedo can guarantee you that when you rent from them you are going to save, in the neighborhood of $50, when compared to some of the big national chain stores.

8.  If you are looking for a size that you are worried you won’t be able to find, call Rose Tuxedo, Arizona.  They have sizes that range from a boy’s size 3 to a man’s size 74 reg.  You can see that they will certainly be able to fit you and your friends and family.

9.  One more thing that is good about doing your rentals from a local business, especially one like Rose Tuxedo, which has been in these parts for about 30 years, is that the staff and family at Rose know what Arizona prom wear should be; what wedding attire is most often used, and what wedding wear is worn in each season for customers who live in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.  In other words, they know their customers.

10.  And, the last reason to use Rose Tuxedo is that they have three convenient locations which are easy to access for all the folks who live in and around Phoenix.  Since they have made it so easy for you, why not give them a call or visit this weekend and tell them what you are going to need for that upcoming wedding, party, or graduation?  They will have you fixed up in no time.

The Best Time of your Life

Tuxedo Styles

For those who went to prom and had a good time here at the end of your Senior year, can you believe it, you are almost out of high school. For those that still have prom coming up, it’s never too late to rent a tuxedo at a great price from a Local Tuxedo Specialist.  Here are a few suggestions.  Gray tuxedos are still very popular, right along with white tuxedos.  The tw0-button black tuxedos are still the number one rental however, along with bow ties, which remain more popular than neckties.  This year it seems that fitted tuxedo coats and pants have been more often requested.  For you guys who think matching your dates dress is weird, it is still the trend and probably will remain a trend until your 5 year-old brother is renting a tux for his prom.

How about Senior Ditch Day? What a way to say, “Goodbye, school” and reward yourself for making it to the finish line. Now it’s time to move on.  Some groups of Seniors like to go to the lake or tube down the river, and others just like to enjoy the day at a friend’s  house hanging out by the swimming pool.   Some students even go to school and the teachers always give them a special break-time for showing up.  Whatever you choose to do, be safe and have fun,  because you earned it.

Graduation Day is yet another milestone in your life and there is nothing like walking for your diploma to seal the deal.  Don’t skip this one.  The feeling you get is fantastic.  Also, you need to walk so that, after the Cap and Gown, you can join your friends at a party, or for a meal.  And, since you are on a roll, you might just want to look sharp for these activities, also. You know what we say, When you Look Sharp, You’re Going to Feel Sharp!  Your Local Tuxedo Rental Shop carries more than just formal wear.  We have classy suits, beautifully pressed shirts, handsome ties, and good-looking dress pants.  But, really, however you show up, remember to be happy and proud because graduation from high school is a one-time deal and quite an accomplishment.  Most of all, this is one of the most enjoyable times of your life.  Maybe you’re going to college.  Maybe you’re going to work.  But, as Charlie Sheen said in the movie, Wall Street  (1987), “Life all comes down to a few moments. This is one of them.”
