History of the Tuxedo

Tags :

The tuxedo today is a symbol of power, money, and importance. It is worn for fancy parties and weddings, and by super spies and celebrities. Like everything else we see in the world of fashion, the tuxedo has a backstory.

The 1860’s began in increased popularity of activities taken place outside for the English middle and upper class. This led to the lounge suit (known in the US today as a standard suit)as an alternative to formal day wear and the evening tailcoat. Another ancestor of the tuxedo is the silk smoking jacket and matching pants ordered by the Prince of Wales (Edward VII).

The tuxedo concept (alternatives for a dress coat) was initially introduced to North America in the fall and summer of 1886. The style varied between waist length and the more conventional suit jacket cut. Tuxedo Park in upstate New York featured some guests attending the Autumn Ball wearing a dress coat which did not contain a tail as commonly worn. It may have been a mess jacket or a more conventional dinner jacket, but the lack of tailcoats paved the way for the modern tuxedo.

Early tuxedo jackets featured two buttons or no buttons with a shawl collar faced in satin or ribbed silk. Later, in the 20th century, the peaked lapel was introduced and became popular and the style utilizing a single button became the standard. At this time, the Oxford grey or a shade of dark blue was highly common. During WWI and again in the 1930’s, midnight blue became a popular alternative to favor with tuxedos . Notch lapels became popular in the 1920’s. Around the 1930’s, the stripe of braid covering the out seam on the legs of the trousers became standard and both the double breasted jacket and white jackets became popular during warmer weather.

Variants of color began popping out in the 1950’s for warmer seasons and by the 1960’s, colors were worn throughout the year and notch lapels came back into fashion. The 1970’s brought on a wide variety of colors for rental purposes. The 1980’s interestingly brought back the classic black style tuxedos (which is surprising due to the love of neon in the 80’s). During this time, the notch lapels returned and have not left. The 1990’s brought in some more traits resembling business suits , including 2-3 button syles, flap pockets, and centre vents. While much of the structure and colors have remained popular since the 1980’s, Midnight blue has once again become a popular option.

Regardless of what era your love of tuxedos stems from, Rose Tuxedo will do what we can to meet your tuxedo needs, whether you want a more classic black or midnight blue or you want to delve into the 1970’s powder blue or other interesting colors. Contact us to schedule a fitting and check out our selection for all of your suit and tuxedo needs. While the tuxedo and suit fashion has changed, the general idea is still the same: men look great in suits and tuxedos!

Rose Tuxedo and the Fourth of July

Tags :

Fireworks_diego_bay_on_the_fourth_of_julyWhat do tuxedo rentals and the Fourth of July have in common?  Well, you may not realize this, but there are several ways in which the two are quite similar:

1,  The Fourth of July is a day to celebrate our freedom from British oppression and the birth of our new, separate, and democratic nation.  Freedom is something you will experience when you make Rose Tuxedo of Phoenix your go-to tux rental destination.  You’ll have an unbelievable number of choices to pick from.  Any style, any size, anytime, Rose Tuxedo will help you make a selection that is totally and completely “you”.

2.  Independence Day is when we, as a country, commemorate the time in history when a large number of people felt strong enough about making their own choices about how to live, how to worship, and how to make a living, that they stood up for these beliefs and surprised even themselves by doing so.  Rose Tuxedo is much like those patriots.  For years they have been standing up for what they believe makes a difference with customers.  Sure, the Big Box stores invest in plenty of advertising and even profess to have the best prices, but it’s just not true, folks.  A local store know its clients and knows the price range for rentals that their  customers can afford.  It makes sense then, that Rose Tux can come in way under a Men’s Wearhouse on any given day.

3.  The Fourth is a day to enjoy family and friends with  parties and fireworks and good, all-American fun.  The folks at Rose Tux are family-oriented, as well.  Started by the same family that owns it today, over 30 years ago, the company has built the store into a Phoenix “institution”.  The company is even named after the family’s mother, Roseanne.

4.  The Declaration of Independence cites three goals made clear by the patriots who fought to make life as good as it could be in their new country.  Those three goals are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  A home-grown company like Rose Tuxedo of Phoenix feels the same way.  When you need a suit, a tuxedo, formal wear, dress shoes, or wedding attire they want to make sure that you get exactly what you want.  They want you to feel comfortable and look your absolute best.  Great suit, fabulous fit, accessorized to a “T” ,that’s how the  Rose TuxRental company does it.

5.  The Fourth of July is not one of those holidays that travels around the calendar based on a seasonal formula or day of the week., like Easter and Thanksgiving.  No, the Fourth of July is always on the fourth of July, dependably, predictably, and consistently.  That’s Rose Tuxedo in a nutshell.

  • Dependable – Just their wedding business alone proves that you can depend on Rose.  When you have to have a tux ready for someone who lives out of town, that fits perfectly and looks impeccable, and the measurements the person sent in are completely incorrect, Rose has that tuxedo fitted and ready on the wedding day.
  • Predictable – No business that is sometimes pretty good; sometimes very bad; and sometimes completely clueless, is going to keep any customers, let alone be a successful endeavor.  Rose has customers who have been using them and them alone for years and years. They get terrific “word of mouth” from customers who have been blown away by their integrity and reliability.  There are no surprises with Rose, just excellent service, time and time again.
  • Consistent – If the folks at Rose say they are going to come in at a lower rental rates than the big boys, that’s what they are going to do.  If you want a size, or style, or duplicates of a much demanded or hard-to-find category of tuxedo, Rose will have it.  They have several warehouses and own all their own stock.  They are always going to have, or be able to get, what you need.

Yep. Rose Tuxedo of Phoenix is as dependable as the old Red, White and Blue.

Why Choose Rose Tuxedo?

Tags :

Rose Tuxedo

Rose TuxedoWhat are some of the things that make Rose Tuxedo of Arizona different from other places that rent tuxedos, suits and accessories?  There are many things that make Rose Tuxedo your tuxedo rental experts:

1.  Rose Tuxedo is family-owned and operated.  Do you know why patronizing a local store is better than going to a big national chain?  For one thing, it keeps your money in the community rather than sending it off to a corporate headquarters, that might even be in a different country.  Local businesses keep the community connected, and and a community business knows what their community needs.

2.  Rose Tuxedo has their inventory of tuxes, suits, and accessories in their own warehouses.  There is no shipping costs or waiting for a shipment to arrive.  This is important when you need your formal wear quickly or when you have an emergency  “costume malfunction”.

3.  You can actually order your tuxedo online.  Or, if you have questions or need help with your formalwear in any way, go to:  service@rosetuxedoaz.com

4.  One of Rose Tuxedo’s favorite sayings is, “When it has to be perfect…”.  Well, that’s exactly what they mean. Now, everyone knows there is no such thing as perfection, but if any business can come close to the bullseye, it’s Rose Tuxedo.  They are willing to go the extra mile to be sure that you get what you want, when you want it, and for the price that you can afford.

5.  That’s why another saying that is popular at Rose Tuxedo is, “You’re going to love the way you save”.  Some of the big box stores say,”You’re going to love the way you look”.  Well, that goes without saying, right?  At Rose, you are going to have both.  You will look sharp and fashionable, and you are going to save money.

6.  Rose Tuxedo is rated on Wedding Wire and was voted locally  Best Place to Rent a Prom or Wedding Tuxedo, three years in a row from the Readers’ Choice Awards.  Rose Tux was also voted Arizona Bride’s “Best of 2013 – Favorite Local Vendor for Grooms Tux, Prom Tux, and Wedding Tux.  Not too shabby, right?

7.  Rose Tuxedo can guarantee you that when you rent from them you are going to save, in the neighborhood of $50, when compared to some of the big national chain stores.

8.  If you are looking for a size that you are worried you won’t be able to find, call Rose Tuxedo, Arizona.  They have sizes that range from a boy’s size 3 to a man’s size 74 reg.  You can see that they will certainly be able to fit you and your friends and family.

9.  One more thing that is good about doing your rentals from a local business, especially one like Rose Tuxedo, which has been in these parts for about 30 years, is that the staff and family at Rose know what Arizona prom wear should be; what wedding attire is most often used, and what wedding wear is worn in each season for customers who live in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.  In other words, they know their customers.

10.  And, the last reason to use Rose Tuxedo is that they have three convenient locations which are easy to access for all the folks who live in and around Phoenix.  Since they have made it so easy for you, why not give them a call or visit this weekend and tell them what you are going to need for that upcoming wedding, party, or graduation?  They will have you fixed up in no time.

Prom Night, Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Tags :

Prom Night: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

promYes, we have talked about this before, but now you have let it slip up on you and you are freaking out.  What are we talking about?  Prom, Mr. Clueless, prom is what we are talking about.   If you don’t have a date by now, you need to ask someone, pronto.  But, truly, you can go to the prom with some of your posse, too.  It’s O.K. to go to prom without a date.  You could even say it might be a little more fun because you can dance with all the girls and no one will be upset. Plus, you can still do all the fun things with your friends.  Remember, prom is like a rite of passage.  Everybody can remember their prom night, even when they get old.  So, don’t miss it, even though you forgot to get a date.

Another cool thing about prom night is you get dressed up.  Trust me, it’s fun.  If you can afford it, GO!  If money is tight, it never hurts to ask for a discount on your tuxedo rental.  You never know ’til you ask.

If you have a date, but you’re worried about the financial challenge of it all, ask the flower folks for a discount; the restaurant folks for a discount; find some promotions you can use to lessen the price of the meal.  Most businesses will bend over backwards to help you.  Remember what I said about never forgetting your prom night?

I have a nephew who is a Senior and he’s talking about not going because he asked a few girls and they already had dates. If that happens, check with some of your friends, guys or girls,  because they may know another person who wants to go, but , just like you, doesn’t have a date.  Most importantly, never, I repeat, never miss prom because you are too shy, embarrassed, or nervous to ask a girl.  Every guy feels that way.  Even the ones who look so cool and suave.   Get over it!  The school year is almost over, and it may be a long time before you see some of your friends  Then you’ll get an invitation to your ten year reunion, and see that girl that you wanted to ask to prom, but just couldn’t.  And, believe me, you’ll say to yourself,”What the heck was wrong with me?”

Here’s another thing.  When you are deciding what to wear to prom, you don’t have to be all matchy, matchy with your date.  A fun idea is to go with the theme of prom.  Like if it’s tropical islands, ask someone to help you pick a white suit; or if it’s movie star night, wear a fancy schmancy tuxedo.  If you don’t want to be noticed too much, your best idea would be to wear a basic, black tuxedo.  It’s not expensive to rent, and you’ll mix in with everybody else.  Plus, the girls will love it.

If you can possibly go, then you must go.  Stand up straight, put your shoulders back, chin up, and have a great big smile on your face.  You’re almost out of school.  You have terrific adventures before you.  If you can’t possibly make it, that’s O.K., too.  Don’t worry about it.  Hey, you are about to graduate.  Have fun and be happy.  Let me tell you because I know, this is one of the best times of your life in many ways.  If you do go…HAVE FUN!
